When doing dishes in the dishwasher…
- Only use the dishwasher when it’s full
- Use short wash cycles for everything but the dirtiest dishes – it works just as well with less energy (and thus less water consumed)
- Turn the dishwasher off after its final rinse and open the door, if there is no air-dry setting. The dishes will dry slowly, but without using any extra electricity (which also uses water)
- Select a water efficient model of dishwasher
- Don’t wash the dishes under running water
- Scrape any leftover and food scraps off plates before washing, instead of rinsing dishes before washing
When doing dishes in the sink
- Wait for a full sink of dishes before you wash
- Don’t wash the dishes under running water
- Scrape any leftover and food scraps off plates before washing, instead of rinsing the dishes before washing
And other places in the kitchen…
- Wash vegetables in a bowl of water, not under a running tap
- Keep water after boiling eggs, vegetables and food like pasta for other purposes, like watering plants (once cooled) or filling up the dog bowls
- Reheat your cold coffee and tea in the microwave instead of making a new cuppa, saving about a quarter of a litre each time
- Food wasted also equals lots of water wasted. Cut your food waste to help conserve water.
- Energy wasted also equals lots of water wasted. Cut your electricity use to help conserve water.
